Time for Some Answers

I’ve listened to rumors the past couple weeks regarding allegations of abuse and preferential treatment coming out of the Kennesaw State University’s women’s basketball program. A couple of days ago some weight was added to these rumors when a report dropped from the student radio. Then the Marietta Daily Journal ran a front page article about it. Long story short 20 players have been dismissed from the team or left the team over the three years that Nitra Perry has been the head coach. The allegations against her involve verbal abuse, physical harassment, and preferential treatment.

Now, I was not there, and I am not sure what all is true and what is not. I am alarmed, however, at the seeming lack of response from the KSU community to these allegations. If a professor treated students like this I am sure there would be swift and immediate action, and a large outcry from the campus community. Why the silence on this? As a KSU alum I think that we should take these allegations very seriously. No one deserves to be treated the way that these women are saying they were treated. No one deserves to have what should be an exciting experience as a student athlete turned into complete misery.

The KSU community deserves an open investigation by multiple offices into the allegations against Perry. Because some of these issues also deal with Vaughn himself, Athletics should not be the only ones asking the questions. If the allegations are true, Perry needs to be gone. If it is found out that Vaughn knew this behavior was taking place and let it continue he also needs to be gone. We cannot allow our fellow students to be treated in such a manner. I for one will not let this issue get swept under the rug.

The Big Lie

My generation was told a big lie. In a hundred different ways we were told that in order to be somebody you had to go to college. This lie lurked the halls of school and into the psyche of a generation. I’m not quite sure where it started, but it sure needs to end. I think we’re seeing the ramifications of it in piles of student debt and numerous underemployed/ unemployed college graduates. Continue reading
